The 68th edition of La Vuelta a España ended on Sunday. After a tough 3 weeks long race and of steep slopes such the Alto de l’Angliru, Christopher Horner (USA – Radioshack) won the final Red Jersey at the age of 42.
Vincenzo Nibali (ITA – Astana) , the favorite at the beginning of this Vuelta according to specialists, had the Red Jersey on his shoulder after stage 11 Time Trial but lost it 2 stages only before the arrival in Madrid.
As the last edition, La Vuelta has been an exciting and a very tight Grand Tour, the 19th stage was a great example of the suspense soaring above this national event. After the Alto de Naranco and a total of 73 hours during three weeks, only 3 seconds were separating the overall leader Chris Horner from Nibali, still second on the overall ranking. The two heroes had to climb the most steep parts of the race not to say of all Grand Tours, with percentages over 20 on some sections. That was an Epic fight, the kind of cycling moment that reminds us how difficult road cycling can be.
